Privacy Policy
When you use Read Aloud, you're trusting us to handle your personal information responsibly – and we take that trust very seriously.
When This Policy Applies
This Privacy Policy clearly explains how we collect, use, and protect your personal data when you create an account, use Read Aloud, visit our website, or subscribe to our updates.
When This Policy Doesn't Apply
This policy does not apply to data managed by third-party websites or services linked within our app or site. These services have their own privacy policies that you should review separately.
We may update this Privacy Policy occasionally. When we do, we'll clearly notify you and ask for your consent if required by law.
Information We Collect
  • Account Information: Your email, username, and securely encrypted password.
  • Usage Information: Preferences, audio settings, interactions within the app, and device information.
  • Payment Information: If you subscribe to a paid service, our trusted third-party payment processors securely handle your payment details.
  • Browser Extension Data (when the “Content Optimization” feature is enabled): For each navigation that occurs in your browser while the feature is enabled, we collect the data described in detail in the “Browser Extension Data Collection” section below.
Browser Extension Data Collection
The Read Aloud browser extension includes feature called “Content Optimization.” When this feature is accepted, the extension transmits the following data, for each page navigation, to our servers at https://app.readaloud.net/api/v1/optimization-rules over HTTPS:
  • The URL of the page you are currently visiting (targetUrl).
  • The URL of the previous page in the same tab, when applicable (referrerUrl).
  • The HTTP Content-Type of the page response.
  • The HTTP status code of the page response.
  • The HTTP request method (e.g., GET, POST).
  • Whether the tab is currently active in the foreground.
  • A randomly generated, persistent per-installation identifier (instanceId).
  • The timestamp of the navigation.
Why we collect this data
This data is used for the following purposes:
  • Retrieve site-specific text-extraction rules from our servers, so the extension can correctly identify the readable content of a page and skip elements like navigation menus or advertisements. Many sites change structure between extension releases, and server-side rules let us fix extraction without requiring you to install an update.
  • Diagnose situations where extraction fails — for example, on pages that return non-HTML Content-Types or non-2xx HTTP status codes.
  • Understand aggregate feature usage, such as the number of unique installations actively using the feature.
How We Use Your Information:
  • Provide and enhance your listening experience..
  • Improve existing features and develop new ones.
  • Communicate important updates or notifications.
  • Customize content-parsing rules for the browser extension, as described above.
  • Analyze aggregated metrics to understand which features are used most and where extraction can be improved. This analysis is performed on aggregated data; we do not assemble or sell individual browsing profiles.
